Understanding Cosmetic & Corrective Tattooing

Cosmetic tattooing is the implantation of a pigment, derived from organic and/or inorganic compounds, into the dermis layer of the skin thereby ensuring the long lasting effect of the procedure. This is achieved through any number of methods from the archaic bamboo method which is a needle threaded onto a bamboo stick to the state of the art digitally controlled computerized tattoo machines.

The success of a procedure is dependent on a combination of many factors, any one of which could determine the failure of the process, failure being the fading away into nothingness of the tattoo. The disappearance takes place when the pigment only reaches the epidermis or upper layer of the skin and the natural shedding or exfoliation of the skin peels away the layers taking the color with it. Depending on depth this can be over a period of days, weeks or months and unfortunately does not fade evenly but instead in patches.

An inexperienced technician is the first line of failure in not achieving the permanent enhancement. The inexperience could be the result of poor training or through the use of inadequate equipment, or both. While on the surface it may appear to the uninformed that all that is required is the placement of pigment into the skin but the reality is much more. The right amount of pressure, the proper stretching of the area, the positioning of the needle(s), the angle of the machine and the right type of pigment all contribute the success or failure of the final results.

Education Forum

The training school is the core of the corporation and is by far the most critical of all the divisions, not from a financial point of view but from a responsibility perspective. Its responsibility not only to the students but to the models being worked on and to the graduate’s eventual clients. Errors cannot be allowed in this business and all schools should have a “no tolerance process” in their curriculum.
A training course in a business that can leave a permanent impression in your skin for thousands of years is not a course to choose without doing some serious homework.

Currently, versus 21 years ago, there are many training schools available, but beware. There are more horror stories than not. Each year the Micro-Pigmentation Centre retrains technicians who have been performing the service for a number of years but who lack the most basic of skills. As a matter of interest over 40% of the clients booking consultations are looking to the company to correct the mistakes of others. Poor pigment placement, wrong color choice, incorrect techniques or simply lack of knowledge. In many cases the only solution is laser removal which is an expensive and time consuming process.

The 1000 sq. ft. classroom is stylishly modern in soft shades of mauve with brushed aluminum accents intermixed with soothing maple millwork designed for the comfort of the students. The integrated stereo system and parabolic lighting provides a relaxed ambiance for the 60 to 70 models that will pass through the school during the week as “ clients “ for the students hands-on procedures. Each color coordinated work station is fully equipped with all of the supplies and accessories that will be required by the students for the week long training. Integrated lockers with pre-assigned keys are provided as security to safely store valuables while in class. Lunch is served in a bistro style atmosphere in the trendy lunchroom designed to have students interact with one another during a mid day break.

Training courses are six days in duration held monthly, Monday to Saturday or Sunday to Friday and enrollment can be a two to three month waiting period. Continued education courses are one day Advanced Training Workshops, which are offered to experienced technicians only. Classes are purposely kept small because of the nature of the business and performance is maintained through the services of four instructors. The classes are "hands on" from day one and all of the student's models are provided by the training centre and scheduled by the administration staff.

The training course follows the curriculum and standards as outlined by the Society for Permanent Cosmetic Professionals ( SPCP) in the United States. The SPCP is a non-profit organization and is the largest and most respected society in North America having done more to advance the cosmetic tattooing business than any other body. It has a strong executive of knowledgeable and experienced technicians and graduates are encouraged to become members.

The Micro-Pigmentation Centre’s course covers all standard procedures for eyeliner, eyebrows and lips plus instructions on color theory and mixing, practicing sterilization guidelines as in force by the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta Georgia and Health Canada in Ottawa Ontario. Machine operating and instruction is covered plus client management including waiver forms and post procedure care information.

The close of each day wraps up with a review of the day by the instructors and students insofar as concerns to be addressed, weaknesses to be worked on for the next day and strengths to be shared amongst the group.

The camaraderie of these students from around the world forge long term relationships amongst each other and the bond of friendship that is formed with the amiable and personable instructors is as inevitable as the results of the training course itself. The accolades that are sent in in the form of thank you cards, hand written notes and e-mails are kept by the school as a souvenir of time well spent, a job well done and as a reminder of the parting tears of some, at course end.
